RE: Our Shabbat meal
In RE, as part of our other faiths unit of work on Judaism, we found out about the Jewish weekly celebration of Shabbat. During Shabbat, Jews remember the Sabbath, the 7th day when God rested after creating the world. They rest as well, spending time with family and saying prayers.
Shabbat starts on a Friday evening with the Shabbat meal. We re-created a Shabbat meal, laying the table with a white table cloth, the two shabbat candles, Kiddush wine and challah bread. Imogen was our mother, saying a blessing over the candles and welcoming in Shabbat. We all said 'Shabbat Shalom', wishing each other a peaceful Shabbat. Karl, our father, then blessed the children, the Kiddush wine and the challah bread. We tasted the sweet bread and drank grape juice, whilst talking about our week.
We ended our Shabbat meal by lighting the plaited Havdalah candle and smelling sweet spices, hoping for a sweet week ahead.
